LectureLeaks for iOS

Friday 02 September 2011 at 12:53 pm

LectureLeaks is a participatory media project designed to increase access to materials from higher education.

You can now record, save, and upload your college lectures directly from your iPhone or Android device. You can also browse our library of recordings and learn any time, anywhere. We believe that higher education should be available to all, for the good of society. Anybody who wants to learn should be able to, so we're trying to develop technology which allows that.

Check it out on the App Store, and browse my source on Github.

ChatSecure for iPhone

Saturday 13 August 2011 at 6:12 pm

I just finished a rough version of the first IM client for iOS devices to support "Off-the-Record" messaging support.
ChatSecure is a very simple IM client for iOS that integrates encrypted "Off the Record" messaging support from the libotr library. It uses the LibOrange library to handle all of the OSCAR functionality (AOL Instant Messenger) and the xmppframework to handle XMPP (Google Talk, etc).

Check it out on the App Store, and browse my source on Github. (more)

Cop Recorder for iPhone

Wednesday 16 March 2011 at 02:08 am

The OpenWatch project currently provides two applications for recording media, OpenWatch Recorder and Cop Recorder 2. Both are capable of secretly recording media and uploading it to the OpenWatch server. However, both of these applications have been restricted to Android devices due to the lack of an iPhone developer.

So I made Cop Recorder for iOS [github.com]. It still hasn't been submitted to the App Store, but you can check out the source now.
Update (5/28/11): It has been approved by Apple and is now available on the App Store!

Australian Researchers Devise Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computer

Sunday 14 November 2010 at 10:07 pm "Researchers have devised a theoretical quantum computer that could function even if one in four qubits were missing. The design is claimed to be the first that tolerates both qubit loss and decoherance to this extent. It performs calculations by measuring, rather than manipulating qubits, so there are fewer points of failure."

NY Times: Quantum Computing Reaches for True Power

Tuesday 09 November 2010 at 7:13 pm There is a pretty good article over at the NY Times concerning recent advancements for quantum computing, and the roadmap for the future.

Musepack SV8 for Mac

Wednesday 13 October 2010 at 3:56 pm

From Wikipedia:
Musepack or MPC is an open source lossy audio codec, specifically optimized for transparent compression of stereo audio at bitrates of 160–180 (manual set allows bitrates up to 320) kbit/s. Musepack was developed using the MP2 codec as a starting point, but many features have since been added, including:

  • subband-wise selectable M/S encoding (as in AAC)
  • Huffman coding (as in MP3 and AAC, but more efficient). Since SV8 the bitstream is compressed by highly optimized canonical huffman tables that yields 2% smaller files and faster decoding
  • noise substitution techniques (as in ATSC A-52 and MPEG-4 AAC V2)
  • pure variable bitrate between 0 and 1300 kbit/s (when needed)

I played around with Musepack in the past and decided to check to see if there were any recent developments. It seems that the new SV8 stream was finalized and there were new SV8 encoder/decoders released. However, there weren't any Mac OS X binaries, or makefiles. So I made some really lazy changes to the source and an Xcode file and compiled my own Musepack SV8 binaries (mpcenc/mpcdec) for Mac OS X.

Download (r468) [Sources]
Update 10-16-10: Using svn r468, fixed all laziness, and included builds of all the tools. Universal binary as well.

Anomos on Mac OS X

Thursday 29 April 2010 at 10:56 pm
Anomos is a decentralized peer-to-peer file sharing system derived from BitTorrent which is capable of protecting its user’s identities by means of an advanced, planned mix network. I updated the port to 0.9.2 and it should hopefully work for other people. Make sure to copy both Anomos.app and CANVAS_OSX to your /Applications folder or it will not work. There is now also an official write-up here.

edit: updated to 0.9.5

SuperCollider, the music software

Thursday 10 December 2009 at 01:07 am

SuperCollider - sc140

What
wiki says:

SuperCollider is an environment and programming language originally released in 1996 by James McCartney for real-time audio synthesis and algorithmic composition. Since then it has been evolving into a system used and further developed by both scientists and artists working with sound. It is an efficient and expressive dynamic programming language which makes it an interesting framework for acoustic research, algorithmic music and interactive programming.

What they say:
In conjunction with The Wire magazine, a unique collection: 22 pieces by artists from around the world, each piece created with just 140 characters of code.

An album with tracks created with source code made to fit the 140 character limit of the waste of bits twitter.com. Tweeting songs. The idea is still cool. The best part is that the source code (archive.org) is open source! Found this on BoingBoing.

Dolphin for Mac OS X

5/19/09:
Dolphin is a cross-platform open-source Gamecube/Wii emulator, licensed under the GPLv2. It is capable of playing many commercial games, and the official site maintains a compatibility list. This page contains a binary compiled from the SVN sources obtained on 5/18/09. There are no guarantees that this binary will work for you, or anyone. Please refrain from emailing me with questions about how to make it work. There is a forum dedicated for this purpose. This port has been built for Intel only, and only tested on Mac OS X 10.5.7.

Wolf4SDL 1.6 for Mac OS X

5/17/09:
Wolf4SDL 1.6 is a port of Wolf4SDL, which is an open source port of the Wolfenstein 3D engine that runs atop the SDL libraries. The usage of SDL allows the source code to be very portable and can be compiled on many different platforms (e.g. Win32, Mac, Linux, Dreamcast, etc). This port has been built for Intel only, and only tested on Mac OS X 10.5.7.
